Older homes have a lot going for them - great bones, character, history. But the landscaping doesn't always keep up. Beds that were never properly defined, overgrown or sparse plantings, and no real structure to tie everything together. That's exactly what we were working with here in Franklin, Ohio.

We started by laying out a clean stone edging border around the entire front bed area, including a custom stone detail that runs along the driveway edge. That driveway border was a small touch that made a big difference. It gives the whole front of the house a finished, intentional look that just wasn't there before.

From there, we planted a fresh layout of rounded boxwoods and accent shrubs spaced to complement the scale of the home without overcrowding it. A young ornamental tree anchors the bed near the porch columns, giving the planting some vertical interest and room to grow. Then we topped everything off with deep black mulch - it makes the green plants pop and gives the beds a sharp, well-kept appearance.

The goal with a property like this is to match the effort the homeowner put into the house itself. That brick exterior and covered porch deserve landscaping that holds its own. Stone edging, a thoughtful plant layout, and fresh mulch installation work together as a system - not just three separate things, but one cohesive design that frames the home properly.

A lot of beds around older homes just need a reset. Clean lines, the right plants in the right spots, and materials that hold up over time. That's what good landscape design comes down to - and this Franklin home is a solid example of what's possible when you put those pieces together.
