This one was a real pleasure to work on. The client had a backyard with great bones - mature trees, open space, a beautiful surrounding property - but no real spot to anchor the yard and make it feel like somewhere you'd want to spend time. That's a pretty common situation, and it's exactly the kind of thing good hardscape design and landscape design can fix.

We built a cedar pergola tucked right into the natural setting. Cedar is a material we love working with because it holds up well over time, takes stain beautifully, and just feels right outdoors. The arched crossbeam detail along the top isn't just for looks - it adds visual weight and makes the whole structure feel intentional rather than thrown together. The proportions matter a lot with a pergola. Too small and it feels like a garden decoration. Get the scale right and it becomes an actual destination.

The outcropping wall work was its own thing entirely. Large natural stone pieces were laid out in a sweeping curve to define the edge between the gravel surface and the lawn. It's one of those details that looks effortless but takes real thought to execute. Getting the stones to follow a natural, organic line - stacking and setting each piece so the joints are tight and the wall reads as one continuous element - that's the kind of work that separates a well-built landscape from one that just looks okay on day one.

Together, the pergola and the stone wall give this yard a sense of structure and permanence. There's a place to gather, a defined edge to the space, and materials that will only look better as they age into the landscape. That's what we're always going for with these kinds of projects - not something that looks good in photos, but something that holds up and fits the property for years down the road.
